DISTRICT 4

A term in City Council is four years. It’s all about time and what you can do in the time you have. Think about four years.
I served my country during the Vietnam era as a Chinese linguist in the Naval Security Group, finishing my four-year tour at the National Security Agency. Four years after that, I graduated with high honors with undergraduate degrees in psychology and zoology. In another four years I published scholarly articles on brain and behavior as part of my pre-doctoral fellowship in neurophysiology at the University of Virginia. Then four years of legal training; finishing with honors in law school followed by a year clerkship with the Ohio Court of Appeals.
I can accomplish a significant amount in four years.
During my career as a trial lawyer in both Ohio and Colorado, I took a four-year break to spend time in the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps VISTA. With the Peace Corps in Ukraine, I secured global grants to assist the marginalized citizens of my city of 150,000 people; I presented articles on HIV/AIDS and IV drug use to conferences throughout Europe; worked with North American religious groups to provide aid to the city; and consulted with an NGO (non-governmental organization).
With AmeriCorps in West Virginia, I ran a nonprofit designed to revive the flood-affected city of Mullens and to increase the employability of the vast number of citizens who were unemployed. In Florida, I directed a youth-empowering nonprofit, which concentrated on self-awareness through outdoor challenges.
Four years.
In 2016, four years after starting my own law practice, I partnered with Orangetheory Fitness (OTF). I left law behind to develop and open a fitness studio in Frederick. I have built not only a culture of health and wellness, but a community of belonging and empowerment within the studio.
Four years later, COVID hit. I was able to keep the spirit of community with my members, even as the studio was shut down for three months.
I and OTF Frederick have given time, talent and treasure to more than 50 local nonprofits. In 2022, I received the SHERO Award in Equality from the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce and Women in Business committee as part of S.H.E. Week. I was honored for my “dedication to creating an equitable and inclusive community at OTF Frederick.”

I have made every four-year chapter count.
Now, I am ready to do the same for District 4.
